Frotz is an interpreter for Infocom type and other Z-machine games. Frotz complies with standard 1.0 of Graham Nelsons specification.
Frotz was written by Stefan Jokisch in 1995-1997. Frotz was ported to Unix by Galen Hazelwood.
Currently the Unix port is being developed and maintained by David Griffith. The Unix port is also the canonical core version upon which all other ports are based.
Main features:
- Compiles and runs without changes on most common flavors of Unix, both open source and not. This includes MacOS X.
- Portable to many other operating systems and hardware.
- Plays all Z-code games including V6.
- Old-style sound support through OSS driver.
- Config files.
- User-configurable error-checking.
- Optional dumb interface.
- Default use of the Quetzal save file format. Command line option to use the old format.

Unfortunately, Activision seems to have lost interest in this title - however, there are a few companies that have a stock of this CD.
In around 1993, a compiler called Inform was released that allowed ordinary mortals to create their own ZCode adventures. This sparked quite a revival, and there are many games available for download here (ftp://ftp.ifarchive.org/if-archive/games/infocom/)

The Mac OS X version supports all the features of the X-Windows version, has a much better user interface, and supports several extra features, such as speech output.

- Support for version 6, including pictures and the mouse

Zip Infinity Carbon 1.0 is a feature-rich and trustworthy IDEs and coding tool. Zip Infinity Carbon is the first native OS X Z Machine interpreter. It uses the Carbon interfaces and was built under Metrowerks CW 5 (because Metrowerks refuses to deliver the CW6 they promised me, but that's another story) with a custom-modified MSL library. It still uses the venerable application skeleton TransSkel, also partially Carbonized. It uses the Carbon Preferences manager, and makes some slight use of the Carbon Event manager and Menu Manager.
