In the "old days" of UNIX, compressing/uncompressing and archiving/unarchiving files involved cryptic commands such as tar -xvf somefile.tar.

However, since those days, the masses have come to use computers, and they expect an easy to use system with graphical elements and interaction.

The days of the command-line interface are distant, and expecting the average user to resort to those older methods is normally out of the question. This is where Untar steps in.

Untar is a wrapper application which acts as the front end to a variety of UNIX utilities, such as tar, gzip, bzip2, rar, and zip.

Untar is able to uncompress files in .tar, .tar.gz, .tgz, .tar.z, .z, .gz, .svgz .Z, .tar.Z, .taz, .tar.bz, .tar.bz2, .tbz, .tbz2, .bz, .bz2, .rar, and .zip formats. Source code and project are included.

GUI Tar 1.2.3 is a useful UNIX utility that lets users wrap and zip 7za, tar, gzip, bzip2 file types. The operating system itself handles the complicated work, while GUI Tar provides a pleasant and easy method to interact with these system tools. GUI Tar is divided into two sections: Extractor and Compressor.

GUI Tar Extractor offers the functionality of its sister application Untar 1.3.2 by being able to uncompress and extract files from archives. The following files can be opened by Extractor: .7z, .tar, .tgz, .tar.gz, .dmg.gz, .svgz, .gz, .tar.z, .z, .Z, .tar.Z, .taz, .tbz, .tbz2, .bz, .bz2, .rar, and .zip.

unpkg is a utility that simply unpacks all the files in a Mac OS X package (.pkg file) into a folder. Very handy, and GNU GPL free too!

unnks is a free and open source application that extracts data from the nks archives that are used by several music synthesizer programs. unnks is designed to have a similar interface to GNU tar.

Version restrictions:
- Only extracting or listing archives is supported, unnks does not create new ones.
- unnks can only extract one type of file, which is typically used for sound samples. nks archives can contain additional data that unnks does not know how to extract.
- The archives that are being extracted must be seekable files. Extracting from stdin or other non-seekable streams is not supported.

Subsonic is a free, web-based media streamer, providing access to your entire music collection wherever you are. Use it to share your music with friends, or to listen to your own music while at work. You can stream to multiple players simultaneously, for instance to one player in your kitchen and another in your living room.
Subsonic was created in order to handle very large music collections (many thousand albums). It uses a combination of directory structure and tag parsing to organize the music. Although optimized for MP3 streaming, it works for any audio or video format that can stream over HTTP (for instance AAC and OGG).
