Layer Four Traceroute 3.1
LFT (Layer Four Traceroute) is a sort of traceroute that often works much faster than the commonly-used Van Jacobson method and goes through many configurations of packet-filter based firewalls more>>
Layer Four Traceroute 3.1 offers you a useful network administration tool which often works much faster than the commonly-used Van Jacobson method and goes through many configurations of packet-filter based firewalls. More importantly, LFT implements numerous other features, including TCP, UDP, and ICMP trace methods, AS number lookups through several reliable sources, loose source routing, netblock name lookups, and more.
LFT also distinguishes between TCP-based protocols, which make its statistics slightly more realistic, and gives a savvy user the ability to trace protocol routes, not just layer-3 hops. Also includes WhoB, a whois client designed specifically for network engineers.

VisualRoute 13.1e is an application including the tools traceroute, ping, reverse DNS, and Whois into a single graphical interface that analyzes Internet connections for locating where an outage or slowdown happens. An IP location database identifies the geographical location of IP addresses and Web servers, showing the path of an Internet connection on a global map. The 2008 release adds IPv6 compatibility, discovery of multiple paths to a destination and an updated IP location database.
Version 12.0h includes an updated IP location database for improved accuracy of IP location reporting.
Annette 1.0
Annette is a network tool more>>
Annette is a network tool. Handy when youre a web developer or network guy and youve got those pesky issues that you need your buddies for. Buddies like ping, netstat, nslookup, and traceroute. Now you can use em without resorting to that terminal, or having to read the man pages (again) because you forgot the command syntax.
Sounds handy... whats it cost?
Annette is free, as is the source code. You can download both with the links at left. If this puts you off, and you insist on paying for such a useful utility, you can register Annette for $5 and give me your email address - Ill send you a note when Annette is updated.
As freeware, Annette is distributed as-is and comes with no support. Sorry!
About the source code.
I put Annette together during Apples WWDC 2000, using my iBook and DP4 (this was back in the day). I gave it a quick update to make it something I would post to the web, but I havent spent much time making the source pretty. It is commented OK, but is not an excellent example of design by any means - its a hack from a conference. I would only recommend it to someone who wants examples of how to use NSTask.
Layer Four Trace 2.0
Alternative traceroute tool. more>>
More importantly, LFT implements numerous other features including AS number lookups, loose source routing, netblock name lookups, et al. Though LFT has been around since 1998, its development effort has just recently resumed.

Visual NetTools 1.2.3 is easy to use and it worked very well with our in house acquisition software. It is a set of network scanning, security, and administrator tools for Apple Mac useful in diagnosing networks and monitoring your computers network connections.
Current version of Visual NetTools includes: Visual Ping sends out an echo request to a specific computer on the network. It can be used to check communication links or to check whether the specific host exists or is running. Ping include not only text, but a complete Visual representation of echo requests from your comp. You can manage Ping interval and target host. History of network host included.
We will add a lot of new tools shortly, some of new tools: TraceRoute: allow you to explore the Internet and troubleshoot connectivity problems. NetStat: displays a list of your computers inbound and outbound network connections, including the information on open TCP and UDP ports, IP address, and connection states. What makes it different from other NetStat utilities is the ability to map open ports to the owning application. Configurable alerts for incoming and outgoing connections are also available. PortScan: an advanced TCP port scanner that allows you to scan your network for active ports. And more useful tools for network monitoring and security.
Major Features:
- TraceRoute: allow you to explore the Internet and troubleshoot connectivity problems.
- NetStat: displays a list of your computers inbound and outbound network connections, including the information on open TCP and UDP ports, IP address, and connection states
- Configurable alerts for incoming and outgoing connections are also available
- PortScan: an advanced TCP port scanner that allows you to scan your network for active ports

GeoIP Lookup Widget 0.2
GeoIP Lookup Widget - Visualize location of IPs in Google Earth more>>
Have you ever wondered where the heck in the world was the IP Address 158.42.4.23 that you see in your blog statistics? Once there was an app called Visualroute that tried to plot on a 2D world map each hop on the route from your computer to that IP address.
But, man... 2D sucks! I want to see the route in that gorgeous Google Earth 3D map! So I built this service that creates Google Earth Plugins using geographical information from My IP Address lookup service.
Switzerland 0.1
Free and open source tool for testing networks more>> Free and open source tool for testing networks
Switzerland is a tool for testing networks, ISPs and firewalls developed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (www.eff.org).
Switzerland will spot IP packets which are forged or modified between clients, inform you, and give you copies of the modified packets.
Enhancements
Lots of bugfixes and some new features:
- Make the messages that Switzerland gives users less cryptic and more informative! Especially
- Improve on the notification of modified/forged packets in versions 0.0.x. In the case of modifications, provide specific reports of which packet fields have been modified, from what and to what. In the case of injections/forgeries, provide tcpdump-style representations of the packets.
- Include a new command line tool, study-switzerland-pcaps, to perform the above analysis based on the -in and -out pcap modification/forgery logs produced by Switzerland. This will be useful both for old logfiles from 0.0.7 and for newly created logs.
- Reduce the incidence and duration of the "you cant connect, because we already have a connection from your IP" problem.
- Fix several internal bugs in the server, which 0.0.7 "handled" by catching exceptions and trying to ignore them.
- When modified/forged packets are observed, dont tell other parties what your NIC and routers MAC addresses are
Internal improvements and adjustments:
Refactor things out of Switzerland.py:
- Matchmaking is now separated and easier to understand
- Forgery context operations are now part of SwitzerlandLink.py
- There are some minor but incompatible changes to the wire protocol, in which reports on forgeries are passed around with the fo-context and forged-details messages.
- We have some traceroute collection infrastructure now, although were not using it yet

Main features:
- Firewall testing
- Advanced port scanning
- Network testing, using different protocols, TOS, fragmentation
- Manual path MTU discovery
- Advanced traceroute, under all the supported protocols
- Remote OS fingerprinting
- Remote uptime guessing
- TCP/IP stacks auditing
- hping can also be useful to students that are learning TCP/IP.
