Free sound synthesizer software for mac

The VET-1 freeware softsynth is a barebones virtual noisemaker endowed with some weird detuning features. It was originally released in 2002 for the Mac OS 9 version of Pluggo; three years later the thing is back, ready to run on OS X.

It responds to MIDI note-on/off, pitch-bend and modulation wheel data.
- compatible with Pluggo Runtime 3.5.2 (Cycling 74)
- suitable for use with ProTools, Cubase, Logic, Digital Performer and programs like the VSTi Host 3.12X (Defective Records) running on OS X Tiger.

Sound Shuffler X 1.7 is a free program which prevents you from being sick of the default alert sounds that came with your Mac. This application will allow you to randomize the beep, each time it occurs. You can also insert your own sounds to the mix. Everytime your system throws an alert beep at you, you'll be welcomed with a randomly picked sound effect instead.

Sound Recorder is a simple sound recording application which uses QuickTime.

Soundplant 26 is a self-contained digital audio performance program that turns your computer keyboard into a fully customizable sample-triggering device.

It allows the assignment of .wav, .aif, and .mp3 files of unlimited size to 72 keyboard keys, with no external devices needed and no MIDI involved. It can be used as a drum pad, to mix together tracks in realtime, to quickly sketch sound designs, or as a performance, installation, or presentation tool.

Because it is not a synthesizer and instead uses your own digital samples (its a software sampler), Soundplant is a virtually limitless electronic instrument.

A simple graphic interface provides for drag-and-drop, point-and-click configuration of each key, including several options which control the way each sound is triggered, along with pitch, offsets, looping, volume, and panning. Sounds can be easily batch assigned across multiple keys at varying pitches and offsets, and keyboard configurations can be saved and loaded.

Sound Menu is a small menu for fast sound input/output switching.

Sound Menu is designed as an Apple Menu. Drag it in your ~/Library/Bundles and just double click on it to activate the menu. To desactivate drag it out of the menu bar with Option-click.

Sound Menu needs an Menu Extra Enabler. You can find it for free on Unsanity (http://unsanity.com/products/free)

English and French localization.

The default set of sounds you get with Quicktime is a bit short on free-reed instruments, and in particular there is no concertina sound. This is a very high quality Sound Font in SF2 format, made from my own baritone Wheatstone English concertina (ca. 1906). It has been compressed with Stuffit, which is not very efficient, as the dedicated packaging programs (SFArk and SFPack) dont yet have Macintosh versions available. Consequently its a very big file - 7.3 Mb in size. You must be using at least version 5 of Quicktime to use it.

To use this file under OS X, unpack it and place the resulting "Concertina.sf2" file in ~/Library/Audio/Sounds/Banks
To use it under Classic systems, place it in System Folder:Extensions:Quicktime Extensions
If you want to use it under both operating systems you can put the file in the OS X location, reboot in OS 9, make an alias of the file and put that in the Quicktime Extensions folder.

You dont have to reboot, or even re-start BarFly. Choose "Add an Instrument" from the Instrument sub-menu. In the Instrument Picker dialog, the Synthesiser popup menu now contains a new synth named "Wheatstone English Concertina". Choose that, then choose one of the three instruments from the Instrument popup.
