FSSoundPlayer is designed for playing System 7 sound files.

For reasons beyond us, QuickTime refuses to play System 7 sound files on Mac OS X, and because of that, weve designed FSSoundPlayer X to fill this immense void. Dont bother resorting to classic or some other behemoth application just to play them, just use FSSoundPlayer X.

Two other scripting additions (in Jons Commands and the GTQ Scripting Library) provide the same functionality.
Play Sound src is a scripting addition for Mac Classic that allows playing sound files.

The event class and ID conflict with the command from the GTQ scripting library. Source code is included.

Dropsound 2.90 is a beneficial and highspeed application which plays sound files. For example: if you have a lot of samples and you want to preview them before using them or cataloging them or what have you, you can drop the lot on DS and they will load into a nice queue and play, one by one, one after the other, until they've all been played. At that point, should you designate the proper checkbox in the preferences window, the queue will clear itself or DS will quit.

The queue is the main feature of DS; all other features exploit this form of organization. One such feature is that DS can convert every file in the queue to AIF or WAV format, which comes in handy sometimes.

Succinctly, Dropsound is somewhat useful especially for working with samples, but not the sort of application that changes your life around and saves your marriage or civil union. Despite that, I would say it's "freakin' awesome", and so would my former friend Ryan Laster, who remarked of DS, "Your app f***in' rocks!" (real quote !).

Play Sound provides a simple, no-fuss way to play sound files in classic Mac OS and Mac OS X. It supports QuickTime sound files (for example, AIFF or MP3 files), Mac OS System 7 sound files (files with a file type of sfil that contain snd resources), or any snd resources embedded into any file.
You can play an unlimited number sounds concurrently or one at a time. You can loop sounds, repeat sounds, control the volume of sounds played, and press the Escape or Command-Period keys to abort sound play.
To use Play Sound as a simple sound file player, simply drag and drop the sound file(s) onto the Play Sound icon in the Mac OS Finder. Better yet, configure the Finder to open sound files with Play Sound when you double-click them (see the Play Sound documentation for easy instructions showing how to do this).
Play Sound is also fully scriptable, allowing AppleScript writers to use simple, easy-to-understand English syntax to play most QuickTime-supported sound files, Mac OS System 7 sound files, and snd resources that are embedded in script applets. To script Play Sound, you call it from an AppleScript script or application.
Enhancements:

Its a Quartz Composition so you can even modify it.

The default set of sounds you get with Quicktime is a bit short on free-reed instruments, and in particular there is no concertina sound. This is a very high quality Sound Font in SF2 format, made from my own baritone Wheatstone English concertina (ca. 1906). It has been compressed with Stuffit, which is not very efficient, as the dedicated packaging programs (SFArk and SFPack) dont yet have Macintosh versions available. Consequently its a very big file - 7.3 Mb in size. You must be using at least version 5 of Quicktime to use it.

To use this file under OS X, unpack it and place the resulting "Concertina.sf2" file in ~/Library/Audio/Sounds/Banks
To use it under Classic systems, place it in System Folder:Extensions:Quicktime Extensions
If you want to use it under both operating systems you can put the file in the OS X location, reboot in OS 9, make an alias of the file and put that in the Quicktime Extensions folder.

You dont have to reboot, or even re-start BarFly. Choose "Add an Instrument" from the Instrument sub-menu. In the Instrument Picker dialog, the Synthesiser popup menu now contains a new synth named "Wheatstone English Concertina". Choose that, then choose one of the three instruments from the Instrument popup.

Haxial KDX Sound Lists Edit allows you to produce Sound List files that can be used with KDX.

To use Sound Lists with KDX Client, create a folder named "Sound Lists" in the same folder as KDX. Put your Sound List files in that folder.

Then in KDX, click Settings, and your files should appear in the menu under "Sound List".
