SambaX
SambaX - Restart Samba automatically when my IP address changes more>>
When my IP address changes, Samba stops responding.
Solution:
Restart Samba every time my IP address changes.
Better Solution:
Use configd to restart Samba automatically when my IP address changes.
Note
This worked at one point. I havent verified this on Panther. Also, since Jaguar, Mac OS X has had support for Samba built in which kind of makes this discussion obsolete. I mostly keep this around for the kicker and configd banter./p>
Background
I started noticing this problem when I began moving my laptop between networks at home and work. Initially, I would just use the Samba Sharing control panel to stop and then start the smbd and nmbd daemons. Unfortunately this is somewhat cumbersome and really isnt necessary. After a few weeks of poking around on and off, I have found a better solution.
Disclaimer
This only works with version SambaX v2.2.2. The newest release from the Xamba project does not work with the method that I am about to describe. However, you can always roll back to the previous version. I assume at this point that you have installed SambaX and SSCT, and that you have at least one working configuration.
Samba 4.0.0TP3
Samba - Implementation of CIFS/SMB networking more>>
Samba can be run on a platform other than Microsoft Windows, for example, UNIX, Linux, IBM System 390, OpenVMS, and other operating systems.
Samba uses the TCP/IP protocol that is installed on the host server. When correctly configured, it allows that host to interact with a Microsoft Windows client or server as if it is a Windows file and print server.
Samba 3.4.2
Samba 3.4.2 is created to be a helpful open source software suite that provides seamless file and print services to SMB/CIFS clients. more>>
Samba 3.4.2 is created to be a helpful open source software suite that provides seamless file and print services to SMB/CIFS clients. Samba is the standard Windows interoperability suite of programs for Linux and Unix. Samba has provided secure, stable and fast file and print services for clients using the SMB/CIFS protocol, such as all versions of DOS and Windows, OS/2, Linux and many others. Samba is an important component to seamlessly integrate Linux/Unix Servers and Desktops into Active Directory environments using the winbind daemon.
Enhancements:
- CVE-2009-2813:
- In all versions of Samba later than 3.0.11, connecting to the home share of a user will use the root of the filesystem as the home directory if this user is misconfigured to an empty home directory in /etc/passwd.
- CVE-2009-2948:
- If mount.cifs is installed as a setuid program, a user can pass it a credential or password path to which he or she does not have access and then use the --verbose option to view the first line of that file. All known Samba versions are affected.
- CVE-2009-2906:
- Specially crafted SMB requests on authenticated SMB connections can send smbd into a 100% CPU loop, causing a DoS on the Samba server.

Samba Sharing Package 2.5.0b3 is regarded as a potential and easy to use Unix type server, currently included in MacOSX, which shares files using the CIFS/SMB protocol.
This is the standard file-sharing protocol used by Windows. By sharing your files with Samba they can be accessed by Windows or/and other Unix-like computers in your network. This program allows you to share othere directories then the 'Home'-folders and make those directories available to guest users. You can also use this package to share your printers with Windows users.
Samba Sharing is not meant to access windows computers. OS X 10.2 has features for this itself. You can also use the shareware product Sharity from Objective Development to access the Windows-network.
