ProM - Framework for Process Mining and the leading process mining toolkit more>>
We welcome and support practical applications of ProM! Note that the ProM framework is issued under an open source license, namely the Common Public License (CPL), and we invite researchers and developers to contribute in the form of new plug-ins.
Currently, there are already more than 150 plug-ins available, and we support the import of (and the conversion between) several process modelling languages, such as:
- Petri nets (PNML, TPN)
- EPCs / EPKs (Aris graph format, EPML)
- YAWL
- (and many more)
There are mining plugins, such as:
- Plugins supporting control-flow mining techniques (such as the Alpha algorithm, Genetic mining, Multi-phase mining, ...)
- Plugins analysing the organizational perspective (such as the Social Network miner, the Staff Assignment miner, ...)
- Plugins dealing with the data perspective (such as the Decision miner, ...)
- Plugins for mining less-structured, flexible processes (such as the Fuzzy Miner)
- Elaborate data visualization plugins (such as the Cloud Chamber Miner)
- (and many more)
Furthermore, there are analysis plugins dealing with:
- The verification of process models (e.g., Woflan analysis)
- Verification of Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) formulas on a log
- Checking the conformance between a given process model and a log
- Performance analysis (Basic statistical analysis, and Performance Analysis with a given process model)
Finally, ProM sports a large array of log filters, which are a valuable tool for cleaning logs from undesired, or unimportant, artefacts.
Process mining techniques allow for extracting information from event logs.
For example, the audit trails of a workflow management system or the transaction logs of an enterprise resource planning system can be used to discover models describing processes, organizations, and products.
Moreover, it is possible to use process mining to monitor deviations (e.g., comparing the observed events with predefined models or business rules in the context of SOX).
Process mining is closely related to BAM (Business Activity Monitoring), BOM (Business Operations Management), BPI (Business Process Intelligence), and data/workflow mining.
Unlike classical data mining techniques the focus is on processes and questions that transcend the simple performance-related queries supported by tools such as Business Objects, Cognos BI, and Hyperion.

MXML is an extensible, XML-based format for storing process event logs. It is the format supported by process mining analysis tools, such as ProM.
Converting your logs to, and storing them in, the MXML format makes them accessible for in-depth analysis with some of todays most advanced business process intelligence tools.
The ProM Import Framework has been designed from the ground up to make converting event log data to MXML a snap. Its convenient interface and powerful capabilities make it usable for even novice and non-technical audiences. At the same time, it is designed as a developer-friendly framework.
Most functionality you may need for stitching together an import filter for your own excentric system is provided out of the box. Forget user interface design, persistency of data and configuration options, and dependency resolution - its all there, tried, tested, and ready for your spin.
Both as a user and developer you will find, that the ProM Import Framework actively supports you in what you have in mind: Get the job done. No fuzz and rebuilding thanks to an advanced plug-in concept. And MXML persistency in all supported storage variants.
The back-end, which the ProM Import Framework uses for working with and persistently storing MXML event log data, has recently been made available as the MXMLib library. Make your process-aware information system capable to export its audit trails in MXML in a matter of hours!
Both the ProM Import Framework and the MXMLib library are published under the revised BSD license. We welcome additions to our code base, most invited are submissions of further plug-ins, for whatever system they may support. Join the ranks of our log-reverse-engineering squad, and write an import filter plug-in for your system of choice!

Process Mining research is concerned with the extraction of knowledge about a (business) process from its process execution logs. Process Mining strives to gain insight into various perspectives, such as the process (or control flow) perspective, the performance, data, and organizational perspective (The processmining.org website has more in-depth information and scientific publications available).
