Free screensavers software for mac

OK, lets face it. The days are long since gone when anybody really needed screen savers to save their computer screen from the dreaded "burn in" or "ghost image".

Macintosh systems shut the monitor off to save energy and improve screen life, and use other techniques to prevent "burn in" on CRT systems. But screen savers are loads of fun, and if one pops up on your screen in an idle moment, or when the phone rings and you take your hands off the keyboard, they can be a pleasant distraction.

It includes original screen savers and the developers version of some classic savers, and even a couple that are down right "retro". Each screen saver has some sort of tunable options, because they are fun. iX Screen Savers are written in Objective C, using Cocoa and Quartz. A few saver, including Xirtam and BabelBloX, use OpenGL.

audiospectrum is a very simple quartz screensaver that reacts to ambient audio. Its simple as possible to keep processor load and heat minimal. This is the good one, in my opinion, the screenshot really doesnt do it justice.
Click the More Information link on this page for all the other audio-based quartz screensavers Ive made. I may try to combine some of these, but keeping CPU use low is the priority.
To use these create (if it doesnt already exist) a folder called "Screen Savers" in your ~/Library folder and place the file there. It will then be available in ScreenSavers preference pane.
Note: If you are using a PowerMac or other computer without a built in microphone, you need to either adjust your default input in Sound Preference Pane so the screensaver can "hear" it, or email me or leave a comment if that doesnt work, so I can provide a version that monitors the line in. (I dont have a computer like this to test it on.)
Enhancements:
- I figured out how to separate the audio spectrum, so there is a low, mid, and high band! The color of each band depends on the relative strengths of each band so its kinda interesting actually, and its quite responsive.

To install it just copy it into your user/Library/ScreenSavers directory or just double click on the ScreenSaver icon.

TO INSTALL GolfXpress Screen Saver:

1. Unzip GolfXpressSS.zip
2. Drop GolfXpress.qtz file into your /Library/ScreenSavers folder.
3. Open System Preferences and choose Desktop & Screen Savers.
4. Click at the tab Screen Saver.
5. Select GolfXpress.

Thats it!

iTunes Screensaver is a little AppleScript that launches the visuals from iTunes in FullScreen without sound.
Enhancements:
- Now two versions are included (one with music, the other without music) an the main window of iTunes goes directly to the dock when launching, so it can not disturb your work :-)

Remember the good old times when "DOS was removed and its memory given to the disk cache"? The NettWaer Screen Saver will bring back the great screen saver of Novell Netware 3.x.
To install it just drag the "NettWaer.saver" icon into the ScreenSavers-Folder in your Library Folder.
