RandomMIDI 1.0
RandomMIDI - Produces random sequences of pitches from notes more>>
RandomMIDI produces "random" sequences of pitches from notes played on an on-screen piano keyboard image. Randomly assigned note duration values range from whole- to sixteenth-notes. The sequences are saved as "type 1" MIDI files using the default piano sound (GM voice 1) at 120 BPM (beats per minute).
The voice and tempo can, of course, be changed by the MIDI file-playing application or device. Files produced by RandomMIDI open by default with the QuickTime Player application.
Entering a note more than once will "weight" the sequence towards that note; this can be useful in creating more tonal-sounding sequences.

NINJAM 0.02a
NINJAM is a program to allow people to make real music together via the Internet more>>
NINJAM is a program to allow people to make real music together via the Internet.
Every participant can hear every other participant. Each user can also tweak their personal mix to his or her liking. NINJAM is cross-platform, with clients available for Mac OS X and Windows.
NINJAM uses compressed audio which allows it to work with any instrument or combination of instruments. You can sing, play a real piano, play a real saxophone, play a real guitar with whatever effects and guitar amplifier you want, anything. If your computer can record it, then you can jam with it (as opposed to MIDI-only systems that automatically preclude any kind of natural audio collaboration1).
Since the inherent latency of the Internet prevents true realtime synchronization of the jam2, and playing with latency is weird (and often uncomfortable), NINJAM provides a solution by making latency (and the weirdness) much longer.
Latency in NINJAM is measured in measures, and thats what makes it interesting.
The NINJAM client records and streams synchronized intervals of music between participants. Just as the interval finishes recording, it begins playing on everyone elses client. So when you play through an interval, youre playing along with the previous interval of everybody else, and theyre playing along with your previous interval. If this sounds pretty bizarre, it sort of is, until you get used to it, then it becomes pretty natural. In many ways, it can be more forgiving than a normal jam, because mistakes propagate differently.
Part tool, part toy, NINJAM is designed with an emphasis on musical experimentation and expression.
NINJAM uses OGG Vorbis audio compression to compress audio, then streams it to a NINJAM server, which can then stream it to the other people in your jam. This architecture requires a server with adequate bandwidth, but has no firewall or NAT issues. OGG Vorbis is utilized for its great low bitrate characteristics and performance. Each user receives a copy of other users audio streams, allowing for each user to adjust the mix to their liking, as well as remix later. This uses more bandwidth than having a server encode a single stream, but has numerous benefits (including lower server CPU use and the client having the full multichannel data for later use).
NINJAM can also save all of the original uncompressed source material, for doing full quality remixes after the jam.
For some samples of how NINJAM can sound, see samples directory.
Enhancements:
- Hidden password in connection dialog
- Password saving option
- Small fixes.

Keiths Tuner 2.1.1
Keiths Tuner - Music instrument tuner more>>
Keiths Tuner is a handy little program I wrote for tuning an acoustic instrument. There are other instrument tuners on the web, but mine has a few advantages over them.
It has the full range of a piano. Also, it has a slick interface that includes a scrolling graphical representation of the pitch you are playing in relation to the pitch you are trying to play and spectrums of the waveform you are playing.

BigBlueLounge 1.0
BigBlueLounge - Offers five different music tools more>>
Has been developed out of pure necessity, mainly from the need for the tools during sessions over the past two years at my work in the Sydney Opera House. I have also been collaborating with some of the members here getting feedback on the widget and incorporating their ideas.
The Widget offers five different tools. Each accessible by clicking on the tab name.
Main features:
- Keyboard: A tiny four octave keyboard is available to be played - you actually get to hear the note via the in-built Core Audio GM Synthesiser. You can select between different sounds, Piano, Guitar, Sine Wave and a Click. When you play a note, that notes frequency, MIDI note number and note name are displayed.
- TapTempo: A simple tool that is probably used at least once per session. Simply click the Lounge or tap your space bar to work out a tempo. You can also see the classic tempo marking for that tempo. A pull down menu offers the choice of a note value to also show the delay in milliseconds for that value at that tempo.
- MediaCalc: This tool is what started me building a widget. You are able to quickly ascertain how much disk space a session will use ahead of time. You can enter in the number of tracks, the duration, the sample rate and bit depth. You can also see what media the resulting file size will be required.
- DigiTool: Calculates the numbers of samples for a given time period and sample rate in milliseconds. Good if you need to enter a delay in samples and you only know the time in milliseconds.
- SonicSpeed: Work out the speed of sound for the given temperature, allowing for conversion between metric and imperial scale, offering a propagation time in milliseconds.
- No matter what tool you are using, the widget offers a live stream of the latest posts from the BigBlueLounge Forums.

Pandora Widget 1.0.2
Pandora Widget - Widget for the music streaming service more>>
You might not have heard of Pandora, a personalized streaming music service. The cool thing about Pandora, besides the fact that its free, is that its music recommendations are based on actual musical analysis (e.g. "vocal harmony, mild rhythmic syncopation, acoustic rhythm piano, major key tonality"), not just artist and genre. Pandora comes from the Music Genome Project.
Well, I made a Dashboard widget for Pandora.
Caveats (not my fault):
1) Dashboard in Tiger doesnt pass events through to Flash applets very reliably (its a known issue), so its can be hard to click on things (try clicking in rapid succession). But it plays music fine. Its probably easier to set up your account and music preferences in your web browser first, and then just use the widget for listening to music (think: "It shuffles music for you").
2) Pandora takes a while to load (like 10 seconds).
Enhancements:
- Minor update for Pandora system changes.
