Install Windows XP / Windows Vista on an Intel-based Mac.

More and more people are buying and loving Macs. To make this choice simply irresistible, Apple will include technology in the next major release of Mac OS X, Leopard, that lets you install and run the Windows XP operating system on your Mac. Called Boot Camp (for now), you can download a public beta today.

As elegant as it gets
Boot Camp lets you install Windows XP without moving your Mac data, though you will need to bring your own copy to the table, as Apple Computer does not sell or support Microsoft Windows.(1) Boot Camp will burn a CD of all the required drivers for Windows so you dont have to scrounge around the Internet looking for them.

Optional alt. At startup, hold down the option key (alt) to choose between Mac OS X and Windows.

Run XP natively
Once you’ve completed Boot Camp, simply hold down the option key at startup to choose between Mac OS X and Windows. (That’s the “alt” key for you longtime Windows users.) After starting up, your Mac runs Windows completely natively. Simply restart to come back to Mac.

The Boot Camp course
Boot Camp Public Beta provides a straightforward means of letting your Mac run Windows. Here’s how it works:

• First, you need to make sure your Intel-based Mac has the latest version of Mac OS X and the latest firmware update. These provide technologies that make Boot Camp possible. It’s also wise to print out the Installation & Setup Guide.
• The Boot Camp burns a CD with the drivers Windows needs to recognize Mac-specific hardware. It is very important to do this before starting the Windows installation.
• The software also helps you set aside hard drive space for the Windows installation, without moving any of your Mac files around. Just drag the intuitive slider to choose the size that’s right for you. Boot Camp also helps you remove the Windows partition, should you so desire.
• Next, insert your Windows installation disc, restart and follow the Windows installation process. The only tricky part is selecting the C: drive manually. Be sure to get this right, or you could erase your Mac files accidentally. Remember, Apple Computer does not sell or support Microsoft Windows.
• After the installation process is complete and your Mac has booted Windows, you’ll need the Macintosh Drivers CD you burned previously. When you insert the CD, it will automatically install the drivers. Follow the instructions in the Installation & Setup Guide for helpful hints.
• Don’t forget to follow best practices for updating and protecting your Windows system (see “Word to the wise” to right).

Carbon Copy Cloner is a backup/cloning utility for Mac OS X.
Carbon Copy Cloner is considered the most cost-effective, easy-to-use backup solution available for Mac OS X.
Supported configurations:
- Local (i.e., not over a network connection), HFS+ formatted partition or hard drive.
- Mounted disk image. Cloning to a disk image will (obviously), not yield a bootable volume unless you use CCC to restore the image to a physical partition or disk.
- Firewire disks including iPods
- CCC will not backup directly to CDs or DVD-R discs, though you can backup to an appropriately sized disk image, then burn the image to disc with Toast or Disk Copy.
- Any machine that supports Mac OS X (officially).

When I first bought my Powerbook (with 6 GB hard drive), I had a great idea. Partition the hard-drive into three sections, one each for MacOS 9, LinuxPPC, and (for the future) OS X (with a few extra utility partitions for Linux swap space, etc.). But then OS X came along, and so did an MP3 collection.

I removed Linux, since I could SSH, emacs, and perl perfectly fine in OS X, and the old Linux directory became an MP3 disk. But OS X is huge, and I felt a little cramped in the 1.7 GB partition, and backing up all the data I had would be too difficult, so repartitioning was out of the question.

But even that was not enough. I saw that there was a swap disk that was taking up a minimum of 80 MB, and more likely 160 MB or more (increasing in size as you use OS X). So why not move it to my MP3 partition (where space wasnt as much an issue), and reclaim the space on my main disk. Thus Swap Cop was born.

Why would you want to do this? Perhaps you are in the same position with an ill-arranged partitioning scheme like I was.

Or maybe you have a small disk that you would like to dedicate to swapping, to increase your OS performance. I originally made the change by hand, but realized that it wouldnt be too hard to have a user friendly software that would take care of it.

DiskStudio allows you to change the partitioning scheme of your hard drive without going through the trouble of completely erasing and reinitializing your hard drive.

Gmsh - three-dimensional finite element mesh generator with built-in pre- and post-processing facilities.
Gmsh is an automatic 3D finite element grid generator (primarily Delaunay) with a build-in CAD engine and post-processor. Its design goal is to provide a simple meshing tool for academic problems with parametric input and advanced visualization capabilities.
Gmsh is built around four modules: geometry, mesh, solver and post-processing. The specification of any input to these modules is done either interactively using the graphical user interface or in ASCII text files using Gmshs own scripting language.

TestDisk is OpenSource software and is licensed under the GNU Public License (GPL).

TestDisk is a powerful free data recovery utility! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally erasing your Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.
