Beginning with the Power Mac G4 AGP (“Sawtooth”) machines, Apple introduced version 2.0 of the Apple DVD Player software. This version (and subsequent releases) of the Apple DVD Player do not require DVD decoding and playback hardware in order to play DVD video disks.

However, at the same time, Apple introduced a limitation into the DVD player: if you have MacsBug (Apple’s machine-level debugger) installed, the Apple DVD Player will display an error message, and then exit.

The DVD Player helper performs exactly one function: it allows to use the Apple DVD Player software to watch DVD videos on a Mac on which MacsBug is installed.

All you have to do is drag the "DVD Player Helper" extension file onto your active System Folder and restart the machine.

Vanilla FTP is a simple FTP client written in AppleScript that takes advantage of Mac OS Xs cURL implementation. You can upload, download, and delete files, all in an intuitive, bare-bones interface.

This is an alpha version, so use Vanilla FTP at your own risk. It is also completely open, enabling developers to modify it however they see fit, but I take no responsibility for any damage, whether intentional or accidental, that anyone does with this application.

With Drop-PS you can transmit text files containing PostScript commands to any AppleTalk-connected PostScript printer.
Drop-PS is a PostScript downloader.

To send a file, folder full of files, or disk full of files, simply drop it onto the DPS application or an alias to the application. You can also drop multiple files, folders, or disks at once.

DPS does its work independently of any installed printer drivers, so you don’t need to have the LaserWriter driver installed.

File Transmogrifier X is a simple AppleScript utility to change the file type and creator type of files.
It offers several options for type/creator twiddling, including batch processing and type/creator shortcuts.

While similar to other freeware/shareware/commercial products that create applications that change the codes to a set value, this allows you to change them to a value you input, like ResEdits info dialog.

Its also free and bare-bones simple. The nifty thing about File Transmogrifier X is that you dont need to open ResEdit (or drop something on it) and then get info on the item. Just drop a file and change away!

Once in a while, I need to take a picture of the screen with a menu pulled down, in order to document one of my shareware programs. If I did this every day, I suppose I wouldnt mind paying for a screen capture program with all the bells and whistles, but as it is, I resist. Years ago, there was a tiny freeware extension called StillDown, by Gregory M. Robbins, that enabled command-shift-3 screen shots with menus pulled down. But StillDown doesnt work with Mac OS 8. Therefore, I decided to write a new free bare-bones menu snapshot program: MenuCapture.
In Mac OS 8.1 and later, if you pull down a menu with a click rather than a click-and-hold, you can snap its picture without the aid of MenuCapture. Thats why MenuCapture is on the Obsolete page.
To install MenuCapture, drop it in your Control Panels folder and reboot.
To use MenuCapture, open the MenuCapture control panel and click the "Enable" checkbox. Then pull down a menu, and press the keys command, shift, and control simultaneously. What happens next depends on what version of the system you are running. With System 7.6 or later, the cursor turns into a cross-hair; let up the mouse button, then click and drag to select a rectangle to be copied to the clipboard. With earlier systems, a snapshot of the whole screen is saved as a picture file on your disk.
The actual picture-taking is done by the built-in screen capture FKEYs: FKEY 4 in the case of System 7.6 and later, FKEY 3 in the case of older software that did not have FKEY 4.
