Specify where you are searching for and the application will open Map with the "near" option. With the iPhone version you will be able to localise your current position by using the GSM cells.
You may use this little application called Placemaps completely free of charge.Its just a way to share this iPhone experience. Have a look on the source if your are interested by making your own iphone application.
