cocoaConnect is a simple to use, yet sophisticated tool which takes Mac OS X Locations to the next level. more>> cocoaConnect 1.01 is a simple to use, yet sophisticated tool which takes Mac OS X Locations to the next level. It can automatically detect a network based on a DHCP packet received or an airport network name. Once that network is detected it changes Mac OS X Location, especially useful if you use proxy servers. It can then also connect your network shares for you and remember the username and password for those shares. It can also set your default printer. This first release has been tested throughly and now it is stable more features can be added. My plans are to add custom detection patterns and also custom actions.
Enhancements: Splash screeen for first run, which explains how to get cocoaConnect setup.
Requirements: Mac OS X 10.3 or later.
ICMP Knock Server
Free and open source CLI based tool to listen for ICMP packets more>> Free and open source CLI based tool to listen for ICMP packets
ICMP Knock Server is a free tool that uses a concept similar to port knocking, which basically involves waiting for a range of packets that match given criteria before executing some action (typically exposing a port, e.g. for SSH connections, that is kept closed or blocked otherwise).
But instead of listening for TCP or UDP packets to arrive on specific ports in a specific order, it accepts ICMP echo requests and checks if their payload lengths and order of arrival match the given pattern.
The advantage is that this approach works with the standard PING tool. Programs with custom code or (although common) networking tools like netcat plus the ability to execute them are not required.
System requirements:
- Python
Asbestos 1.1
Asbestos is such a useful software in which a firewall machine sits between two networks and examines each packet trying to travel from one network to the other and decides whether to allow it to pass. more>>
Asbestos 1.1 is such a useful software in which a firewall machine sits between two networks and examines each packet trying to travel from one network to the other and decides whether to allow it to pass. This script will not protect the other machines on your network, only the Mac OS X box it's installed on,so it isn't a true firewall, just armor for an individual system.
What the script does is preventing outsiders from accessing ports where you're running daemon programs that may have privilege - if they can't access them, they can't exploit any bugs in the code.
Requirements: Mac OS X Public Beta
wake 20050624
wake 20050624 offers users a brilliant Perl program which can send Wake-on-LAN packets to wake up remote systems more>>
wake 20050624 offers users a brilliant Perl program which can send Wake-on-LAN packets to wake up remote systems. It works on any system that has Perl installed and supports UDP; any Unix-like system and even Microsoft Windows should work
How does it work?
You call wake with the MAC address of the machine you want to wake up (e.g. wake 00:40:63:DE:56:3E). This MAC address is used to construct a special packet containing the sequence 0xffffffffffff, followed by 16 repetitions of the MAC address. The machine listens to the network, and if it detects this sequence, it is powered up. Of course, this requires that the machine supports Wake-on-LAN (usually, you also have to enable it in the BIOS).

Installing this component is rather simple. If you wish to to be available to all users on the system, simply copy A52Codec.component to /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components. To install it for a single user, place it within Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components inside the users home directory. Quit any open Quicktime applications, (including FrontRow) you wish to use this component and relaunch them.
Enhancements:
- Increased audio buffer size to play files with large packet sizes.
WakeOnLan 0.89
WakeOnLan - Wake up other computers more>>
I made this little App because I often find myself in the situation where I want to access data on other computers, only to find that they are sleepin.
Using WakeOnLan, I can wake them up with my mouse, instead of with my feet...
NOTE: You can wake up any computer (Mac, PC) supporting remote wake up, but remote put asleep works for Macs only.
According to Apple, the following Macs can be woken up:
All Macintosh computers produced in 2003
Power Mac G5
Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) or later
Power Mac G4 Cube (all models)
PowerBook (FireWire) or later
iBook (all models)
iMac (Early 2001) or later
WakeOnLan uses the magic packet method supported by most network cards, including Apples. To wake up a computer, you need to know its mac address, which is a 6 byte address looking like 00:0a:95:d5:73:92.
This mac address is fixed for every single interface and cant be changed (ok, some strange Ethernet cards can). Dont worry about it, WakeOnLan discovers and remembers all mac addresses for you. (If you still want to find find them by yourself, open System Preferences, select Network, then Ethernet)
WakeOnLan uses remote Remote Apple Events (AppleScript) to put a Mac asleep.
Enhancements:
- ixed port number bug on Intel systems
MacSniffer 1.0b1
MacSniffer allows you to view all of the traffic on a network connection more>>
MacSniffer includes a filter editing interface and a filter library to easily construct and reuse packet filters to view a subset of all the traffic on the connection, such as just that destined for a specific host or port.
You can choose the level of detail you want captured, from just the minimal packet headers (showing source and destination hosts and ports) up to a full hex and ASCII dump of the packet contents.
MacSniffer can be useful for diagnosing many network problems, debugging client/server programs, and scanning for particular network exploits in real time.
