Infinite and Interactive Realtime Composition for Sampled Sound Particles

Amazing Maze is a work-in-progress that started in 1993 when I was working at IRCAM (Paris). In this realtime composition I attempted to realize ideas that have been haunting me for many years, and which I first accomplished in Lexikon-Sonate (1992-2007) for computer-controlled piano. Both pieces envisage a new type of music

• which composes itself at the time of its sounding
• which is not merely a reproduction of a pre-fabricated notation
• which is capable of reacting on exterior influences
• which exhibits infinite temporal expansion
• which never repeats itself.

Amazing Maze is represented by a computer program which generates music by manipulating sampled instrumental sounds according to certain compositional strategies that are carried out in different structure generators. Each generator synthesizes its own characteristic sound world.

The compositional algorithms are currently programmed in MaxMSP by taking advantage of my Real Time Composition Library (RTC-lib). This collection of software modules offers the possibility to experiment with a number of compositional techniques, such as serial procedures, permutations and controlled randomness.

The sound material used in Amazing Maze is based on instrumental interpretations of three different types of sounds: points, grids, and planes which have been worked out for different instruments exploring sound qualities beyond the normal playing.

ProteinShop is an interactive tool for manipulating protein structures. It was designed to quickly create a set of protein configurations using human knowledge and intuition. These configurations may be subjected to local or global optimization.

In the process of creating commercial multimedia titles (often in the process of manipulating data) it has been quicker to write a FileMaker plugin function to do a specific task (or part of a task), than it would be to perform the task by other methods. As a result of these ongoing needs, the Jazz Utils plugin has developed. As we choose to work on a Macintosh, many of the plugin functions are Macintosh only.

The plugin includes clipboard functions, HTML formatting (tagging) functions, functions to obtain the mouse location (x, y), cross-platform character conversion, ascii values, and FileMaker script debugging tools. The mini-icons below indicate which functions have been implemented for each platform. The Windows™-only function allows switching between applications. (On the Mac you can use AppleScript to accomplish the same task).

The functions are by no means comprehensive, but they got me out of a bind, and hopefully will help others too. Download the documentation for more details.

The plugin has been updated for Mac OS X, and to the best of our knowledge is compatible with all versions of FileMaker up to and including version 7.0, with the following exceptions:

• Jazz-Debug STE requires Mac OS System 7.1 or later and AppleEvents. Jazz-Debug STE Slow also requires AppleScript.
• Jazz-Clip2HTML does not work in FileMaker Pro 7 due to the modified clipboard format used in this version. Jazz-Clip2HTML was originally written as a method of extracting style information out of FileMaker. This functionality has been replaced and improved by the Jazz HTML and Jazz Styled Text shareware plugins.

FileMaker Pro 7 note:
FileMaker Pro version 7 on Mac OS X now requires that all Macintosh plugins end with the extension ".fmplugin". Existing users must rename their plugins before using them with FileMaker Pro 7. Alternatively you may download a fresh copy which has been appropriately renamed, and the extension has been hidden.

Mage 1.0.2 is designed specifically for manipulating the red, green, and blue color components of pixels on the screen to make amazing and artistic patterns with the use of mathematical equations (input by the user). As users know, every pixel on a computer screen has a certain x, and a certain y coordinate. The color of a pixel is determined by its red, green, and blue components.

YVS Picture Translator provides comprehensive Apple Script? functionality for manipulating pictures.

All the Apple Script? functionality can be performed on displayed images or offscreen. When manipulation of pictures is performed offscreen YVS Picture Translator is efficient at converting the pictures.
