NINJAM Client (OS X) 1 attracts users with a versatile and free program which enables people to make real music together through the Internet. Every participant can hear every other participant. Each user can also tweak their personal mix to his or her liking. NINJAM is cross-platform, with clients available for Mac OS X and Windows.

NINJAM uses compressed audio which allows it to work with any instrument or combination of instruments. You can sing, play a real piano, play a real saxophone, play a real guitar with whatever effects and guitar amplifier you want, anything. If your computer can record it, then you can jam with it (as opposed to MIDI-only systems that automatically preclude any kind of natural audio collaboration.

SimpleSynth is a simple soft synth that takes input from a connected MIDI device and can play instruments from Soundfonts and DLS files including Apples default General MIDI sound set.

The default set of sounds you get with Quicktime is a bit short on free-reed instruments, and in particular there is no concertina sound. This is a very high quality Sound Font in SF2 format, made from my own baritone Wheatstone English concertina (ca. 1906). It has been compressed with Stuffit, which is not very efficient, as the dedicated packaging programs (SFArk and SFPack) dont yet have Macintosh versions available. Consequently its a very big file - 7.3 Mb in size. You must be using at least version 5 of Quicktime to use it.

To use this file under OS X, unpack it and place the resulting "Concertina.sf2" file in ~/Library/Audio/Sounds/Banks
To use it under Classic systems, place it in System Folder:Extensions:Quicktime Extensions
If you want to use it under both operating systems you can put the file in the OS X location, reboot in OS 9, make an alias of the file and put that in the Quicktime Extensions folder.

You dont have to reboot, or even re-start BarFly. Choose "Add an Instrument" from the Instrument sub-menu. In the Instrument Picker dialog, the Synthesiser popup menu now contains a new synth named "Wheatstone English Concertina". Choose that, then choose one of the three instruments from the Instrument popup.

Apple MainStage 2.0.1 is developed to be a handy tool with which keyboardists, guitarists, and other musicians can easily perform with software instruments and effects through a full-screen interface designed specifically for the stage.

MakingMusic is an online Musical Instrument Encyclopedia, providing a description, an image, and a sound clip per instrument.
The aim of MakingMusic is to form a comprehensive database of musical instruments, the criteria being anything from any culture or any age that is used to make music
This is an ongoing Freeware project, with new instruments being added to the database as the research progresses. Each time you launch the application you may find you have access to different amounts of information.
