GRASS GIS 6.4rc5

GRASS GIS 6.4rc5

Geographic resources analysis support system. more>>

GRASS GIS 6.4rc5 is stand for Geographic Resources Analysis Support System, which used for data management, image processing, graphics production, spatial modelling, and visualization of many types of data. It is Free (Libre) Software/Open Source released under GNU General Public License (GPL). GRASS is official project of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation.
Originally developed by the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratories (USA-CERL, 1982-1995), a branch of the US Army Corp of Engineers, as a tool for land management and environmental planning by the military, GRASS has evolved into a powerful utility with a wide range of applications in many different areas of scientific research. GRASS is currently used in academic and commercial settings around the world, as well as many governmental agencies including NASA, NOAA, USDA, DLR, CSIRO, the National Park Service, the U.S. Census Bureau, USGS, and many environmental consulting companies.
The new GRASS 6 release introduces a new topological 2D/3D vector engine and support for vector network analysis. Attributes are now managed in a SQL-based DBMS. A new display manager has been implemented. The NVIZ visualization tool was enhanced to display 3D vector data and voxel volumes. Messages are partially translated (i18N) with support for FreeType fonts, including multibyte Asian characters. New LOCATIONs can be auto-generated by EPSG code number. GRASS is integrated with GDAL/OGR libraries to support an extensive range of raster and vector formats, including OGC-conformal Simple Features.
The GRASS Development Team has grown into a multi-national team consisting of developers at numerous locations.
In September 2006, the GRASS Project Steering Commitee was formed which is responsible for the overall management of the project. The PSC is especially responsible for granting SVN write access.
Major Features:

  1. GRASS (Geographic Resources Analysis Support System) is a raster/vector GIS, image processing system, and graphics production system.
  2. GRASS contains over 350 programs and tools to render maps and images on monitor and paper; manipulate raster, vector, and sites data; process multi spectral image data; and create, manage, and store spatial data.
  3. GRASS uses both an intuitive windows interface as well as command line syntax for ease of operations.
  4. GRASS can interface with commercial printers, plotters, digitizers, and databases to develop new data as well as manage existing data.
  5. GRASS supports workgroups through its LOCATION/MAPSET concept which can be set up to share data over NFS (Network File System). Keeping LOCATIONs with their underlying MAPSETs on a central server, a team can simultaneously work in the same project database.
  6. GRASS is released under GNU GPL, the source code (5.x: more than 1 million lines of C; 6.x 500k SLOC) is completely available.
  7. GRASS provides a sophisticated GIS library which can be used for own developments.

gvSIG 1.0

gvSIG 1.0

gvSIG brings a simple and effective tool oriented to manage geographic information, an integrated Geographic Information System (GIS) and Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) client. more>>

gvSIG 1.0 brings a simple and effective tool oriented to manage geographic information, an integrated Geographic Information System (GIS) and Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) client. It is characterized by a user-friendly interface, with a quick access to the most usual raster and vector formats. In the same view it includes local as well as remote data through a WMS or WFS source.

It is aimed at users of geographic information, whether professionals or civil servants (city councils, councils, regional councils or ministries) from any part of the world ( at the moment its interface is in Spanish, Valencian, English, Basque, Gallego, Czech , French, German, Italian and Portuguese), in addition to being freeware.

Given its freeware nature (open source) it is highly interesting for the international community of developers and, in particular, for university settings due to its R&D&I component. In fact, special emphasis has been placed on the expansion of the project so that potential developers can easily expand the functions of the application, as well as develop completely new applications from the libraries used in gvSIG (as long as they comply with the GPL license).

Requirements: Mac OS X 10.3 or later.

GeoServer 2.0 Beta 2 / 1.7.5

GeoServer 2.0 Beta 2 / 1.7.5

Open source server that will help you connect information to the Geospatial Web more>>

GeoServer 2.0 Beta 2 / 1.7.5 is a powerful software that allows users to view and edit geospatial data.

Using open standards set forth by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), GeoServer allows for great flexibility in map creation and data sharing.

Open and Share Your Spatial Data

  • GeoServer allows you to display your spatial information to the world. Implementing the Web Map Service (WMS) standard, GeoServer can create maps in a variety of output formats. OpenLayers, a free mapping library, is integrated into GeoServer, making map generation quick and easy. GeoServer is built on Geotools, an open source Java GIS toolkit.
  • There is much more to GeoServer than nicely styled maps, though. GeoServer also conforms to the Web Feature Service (WFS) standard, which permits the actual sharing and editing of the data that is used to generate the maps. Others can incorporate your data into their websites and applications, freeing your data and permitting greater transparency.

Use Free and Open Source Software: GeoServer is free software. This significantly lowers the financial barrier to entry when compared to traditional GIS products. In addition, not only is it available free of charge, it is also open source. Bug fixes and feature improvements in open source software are greatly accelerated when compared to traditional software solutions. Leveraging GeoServer in your organization also prevents software lock-in, saving costly support contracts down the road.

Major Features:

  1. Fully compliant to WMS 1.1.1, WFS (1.0 and 1.1, transactions and locking) and WCS (1.0 and 1.1) specifications, as tested by the CITE conformance tests. GeoServer additionally serves as Reference Implementation for WCS 1.1 and WFS 1.0 and 1.1
  2. Easy to use web-based configuration tool - no need to touch long, complicated config files.
  3. Mature support for PostGIS, Shapefile, ArcSDE, DB2 and Oracle.
  4. VPF, MySQL, MapInfo, and Cascading WFS are also supported formats.
  5. Native Java support for GeoTIFF, GTOPO30, ArcGrid, WorldImages, ImageMosiacs and Image Pyramids
  6. Support for MrSID, ECW, JPEG2000, DTED, Erdas Imagine, and NITF through GDAL ImageIO Extension. Any format that GDAL supports can be added with a bit of coding.
  7. On the fly reprojection, for WMS and WFS, with an embedded EPSG database supporting hundreds of projections by default.
  8. Web Map output as JPEG, GIF, PNG, PDF, SVG, KML, GeoRSS.
  9. Excellent Google Earth Support, including advanced features like super overlays (vector and raster), 2.5D extrudes, Time, advanced template options for pop-ups and titles, and styling with SLD.
  10. Ability to 'publish' data to Google's geo crawlers, so data from GeoServer can be exposed on Google Maps and Earth searches.
  11. Integration with GeoWebCache, for accelerated tile mapping (like on Openlayers or Google Maps)
  12. Raw vector data available as GML (2.1.2 and 3.1.1), GeoJSON, and zipped Shapefiles through the WFS.
  13. Anti-aliased images by default, with option to turn off or to use a custom defined palette for increased performance.
  14. Integrated OpenLayers as a default ajax viewer and preview engine.
  15. Standards compliant 'by default' - no need to figure out complex configuration options just to serve basic data.
  16. Performance, on par with the fastest open source mapping servers.
  17. Support for atomic database transactions through the standard WFS-T protocol, available on all data formats.
  18. Versioning WFS to support wiki-style history, attribution, and rollbacks on geospatial data.
  19. Integrated Security through the powerful acegi java framework, to secure individual services and layers to groups of users.
  20. User Interface translated in to French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese, Chinese, Russian and more.
  21. Support for Component WMS / Feature Portrayal Service
  22. Long Transactions through a full implementation of the Locking portion of the WFS specification.
  23. Streaming data readers: no memory bound limit to the amount of data that can be returned.
  24. Full SLD support, the open standard to define map styles, including both user defined (POST and GET) and used natively in styling configuration.
  25. Full Filter support on all data formats in WFS (but optimized for backend format where possible).
  26. Innovative Validation Engine that checks inserted features against a configured set of topological and attributed based rules, to maintain backend integrity.
  27. Java (J2EE) servlet-based, can run in any servlet container.
  28. Designed for extension, source code that's a pleasure to read.
  29. Easy to write new data formats with GeoTools DataStore interfaces and helper classes, making GeoServer the standards based interface to legacy data.
  30. No need to recompile to support more data formats, GeoTools DataStores instantly plug-in to GeoServer, even showing up as an option in the configuration gui.
  31. Modularized Codebase for pluggable services.
  32. Active Community modules, for developers to experiment with plug-ins before they are ready for core distribution, including modules for REST Configuration API, as well as using REST for User role management and SLD management. Plus CSV and Excel and HTML Image Map
  33. True open source development style, built by a strong community, that you can join and become a part of, tailoring GeoServer for your needs.
  34. Documentation that details everything in easy to understand language.
  35. Featured in books like GIS for Web Developers.
  36. Active email lists for quick support.
  37. Commercial grade installation, support, customization and improvements available from an eco-system of companies, non-profits, and consulting individuals and more....
