The Note Frequency calculator Dashboard widget is used to calculate the frequency (in Hertz, or cycles-per-second) of a note based on a note name or a MIDI note number. It can also be used in the reverse capacity to derive a note name and MIDI note number based on the closest note found to a supplied frequency.

This tool is primarily useful in music production - both for studio mixing and recording, as well as in live sound - when it is of particular interest to note the fundamental frequency range of an instrument and/or of the primary notes of a passage played on an instrument.

It’s better than just banging on the keyboard, which doesn’t really represent what sentences and words really look like. It’s better than repeating something like “fake text here, fake text here,” which ends up creating distracting patterns. And it’s better than pasting in real English language text from somewhere else, since the viewer’s eye will end up getting stuck on the dummy words instead of looking at the design as a whole. The actual words produced by the widget are from a Latin text by Cicero (the guy in the widget) and people have been using the text in this way since the 1500s!

As usual, you can find the preferences on the back side of the widget — choose how much text you want to be copied with each click of your mouse and that’s that. Your preferences hang around even after closing the widget, logging out or rebooting.

Widgzee remembers your high scores which are categorized by the number of Yahtzees you obtained during the game.

Please contact me with any feature requests or problems found. An idea I’m considering, if there is enough interest, is a worldwide high score system.
