goSerial is an application that lets you talk to serial devices.
This type of application is often refered to as a terminal, because it mimics the behaviour of the terminal hardware that was used to communicate with servers and mainframes in the old days.
While only few people need to talk to server machines through serial cables today, there are a lot of other devices that use some sort of serial connection:

Apple SerialDMA Update 2.1 is a reliable and useful live update module which includes version 2.1 of the SerialDMA extension, which supplies a replacement serial driver for a specific set of Mac OS computers.

This new driver fixes an incompatibility that prevents certain serial devices, such as digital cameras, from establishing an initial connection. If you are using one of the Mac OS computers listed above, and you are using a serial device which cannot establish an initial connection, you should install this update.

Serial Mail 4.6 is built as a plug-in for the Mail application which can generate serial mailings (mail merge, bulk mail) using data provided by an Address Book group.

The script will process the message body of the (selected) template message and replace certain tags by their corresponding value from the Address Book for each recipient. You may use custom data by specifying your own labels in the "related names" section of the persons Address Book entry (e.g. "Assistant", "Customer number", etc.) and the script will replace the corresponding tags by the corresponding Address Book values (Example: Use the script to inform students of their score (and other stuff), which is stored in AddressBook).

The program supports almost any of the data fields of the OS X Address Book, including user defined fields. The template rules are also applied to the subject line (so you may generate custom subject lines). Rich text emails may be created (but plain text templates are processed faster).
