Transcoder 0.1b1

Transcoder 0.1b1

Transcoder - convert between character encodings more>>
Have you ever downloaded a song with foreign ID3 tags, only to find its title, artist, album, and other attributes a garbled mess of characters that in no way resemble what they should?

Transcoder is here to help! Select source and target encodings (some trial and error may be involved) and click the “Transcode” button to convert between character encodings.

Note that this program is more of a “toy” utility than anything else; it won’t work in all cases (sometimes ID3 tags become garbled beyond repair—if you see any question marks in the source text it’s a good sign that you won’t get any useful results).

Transcoder is a Universal Binary and requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

GreekConverter 1.0

GreekConverter 1.0

GreekConverter offers a helpful tool that is specially designed for people who deal with ancient Greek texts on their computers. more>>

GreekConverter 1.0 offers a helpful tool that is specially designed for people who deal with ancient Greek texts on their computers. There are three common encodings for ancient Greek on Macintoshes: Beta Code, SMK GreekKeys from Scholar's Press, and SuperGreek/LaserGreek from Linguist's Software. If you don't know about these, you probably don't need GreekConverter.

These three encodings have their strengths and weaknesses, and many classicists find themselves using at least two, if not all three. That can be a hassle. This free utility will convert Greek text in any of these three encodings to Greek text in any other encoding. Instructions are in the ReadMe file.

  • Mac OS 8.1 or higher

XMLerrorFinder 1.0

XMLerrorFinder 1.0

XMLerrorFinder - finds and repairs errors in an XML file more>>
XMLerrorFinder is a program that detects and repairs errors in an XML file that will cause RB to throw an XML Exception. Specifically this application searches for Ascii characters from 1 - 31 (not including Linefeed Character - 10 and Carriage Return Character - 13).

These characters cause the XML tools in RB 5.5 to throw the exception when trying to parse the file.

Interestingly enough on the Mac, you can inadvertently enter these lower ascii characters by holding Control and typing a letter in a standard RB editfield.

Therefore it is possible for a user to accidentally hit Control-(Letter) instead of Shift -(Letter) and thereby insert a bad character into the editfield which will then get saved into the XML file. So the next time the file is read it will not be able to parse the file.

This very problem cause me some headaches in some of my apps, until I was finally able to track down the culprit.

This RB code also includes an example to demonstrate which Ascii values will cause an XML exception under different text encodings.
