- Added a confirmation dialog for the Command-Q keystroke. This prevents inadvertent quitting of a game.
- Added Pause mode (Cmd-P) which pauses the game and allows you to switch to other running applications.
- Under OSX, you can now choose to run the game in 256-color mode. Previously, Thousands of Colors was automatically used. The difference between the two settings is subtle. The game can only display 256 colors, regardless of your monitor settings.
Bug Fixes and Changes
- Fixed several potential crashes related to sceen rendering.
- Fixed text font color probelms in several screens.
- All screen shots are now saved in the "Screenshots" folder.
- Screen shots are now created with proper file type and creator for OSX.
- Under OSX, if you hosted a multiplayer game, your name might have appeared twice as a player.
- Fixed a Jaguar problem on multiple monitor systems where the game would run but the graphics would not be displayed. If you have this problem, you may need to reselect your preferred monitor in the Age of Empires II setup window. Press the Command key when launching the game to display this dialog.
- Under OSX, actions that can cause another running application to come to the front (such as the Software Update control panel) no longer causes problems for Age of Empires II. When this happens, the game is automatically paused. To resume playing, press the Resume button in the Pause dialog.
- The In-Game Cursor has now been re-enabled under OSX. When on, a large cursor is displayed while playing the game. This cursor changes as you move the pointer over units and buildings. Press the Command key when launching the game to display the dialog for changing this setting.
- Eliminated double fade up when game launches under OSX.
- Completed tasks are now crossed off the task list.
- Sync warnings no longer appear in recorded game play back.

Epic gameplay
There are large game areas, accurately mapping real world locations. All maps are based on real atlases of the ancient world. The size of the game world combined with the subtle interactions of the game model make for a truly epic game.
20 sides
Each game can have up to 20 AI sides to compete against, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, based on the nations that would have been present at the time of the scenario!
Huge realistic battles
Choose how your troops deploy for battle, controlling their formations, making best use of the terrain available and allowing for their morale and experience. The combat model is being based on historical data to give the most realistic look and feel ever seen in a computer game. Hundreds of men will be displayed to give a really epic feel to the battles. All uniforms and weapons will be based on historical data to make sure they are as accurate as possible.
3D battlefields
The battlefield terrain is made up of 3D rendered terrain. Height are accurately modelled and affects the combat model. Every location has its own unique battlefield.
Detailed economics
Control your cities, allocate workers to collect resources, control city growth, train new regiments. Increase production by constructing new buildings or upgrade your city hall to expand the amount of land that can be worked. Build fortresses for protection and to train better your soldiers.
Replayability
Play each map a number of times in completely different setting. Fight over Italy to unify the tribes into the powerful nation of Rome, then later fight over the same map as the Romans when they are invaded by the fearsome Gauls.

- Quite a few of the changes in the updater help improve GameRanger support. In addition, the following specific changes were made:
- The initial connection process for GameRanger games is much more reliable now, especially when running behind a router.
- Added support for GameRanger Premium.
- Online games now work from dial-up connections.
- Startup movies are skipped when launching GameRanger games.
- The 1.01 version is now network compatible across all different language versions. English, French, and German versions can play network and online games.
- Both "delete" keys (the large one and the small one above the arrow keys) will now destroy units and buildings.
- Cmd-Shift-P will pause the game (useful for laptops).
- Occasionally the installer will leave a few files with truncated file names. The application now looks for these and renames them at launch time.
