NetDXCluster 2.0
AR DX telnet access for amateur (ham) radio operators. more>>
This software only works under Mac OS X 10.1.3 or later. It also requires the BSD subsystem that is typically installed when installing OSX.
If the BSD subsystem option was not installed, you will probably receive a quick failure on starting it up. NetDXCluster works by launching Telnet in a shell and letting that do the networking.
Jhead 2.5
Jhead - The files coming out of a pretty much all Digital cameras are in the Exif flavour of Jpeg files more>>
Because I am interested in photography, I am always curious just exactly what settings my fully automatic digital camera actually did end up using. Theres a few programs out there that can parse some of these headers, but I couldnd find one that I could compile to an executable, and none that actually figured out what the camera settings were from the various confusing ways in which the fields can be expressed.
Parsing the data of interest out of an Exif header is not straightforward. There is a large number of ways that simple data such as shutter speed or aperture setting can be expressed in inside of an Exif header. It can be an integer of various forms, or a fraction or floating point, which must subsequently be raised to a power to get the true value. Then it can be stored big-endian or little endian, and there are different fields for expressing the same values! It sounds like complete eveolutionary anarchy, but I think its just a comitee designed spec.
With all its complexity, interestingly enough, plain text ASCII would both be smaller in size and easier to parse! So I wrote this command line driven program to parse through the little file system in the Exif headers and extract the stuff I really care about: What the digital camera settings really were.
The other thing I realized is that the files coming out of most digital cameras contain an integral thumbnail as part of the Exif header. This thumbnail is used for flipping through really tiny images on the LCD, although most cameras, when viewing just one image on the LCD dont use it (too little detail).
This thumbnail takes up typically around 10k of data in the header. Once the picture is off the camera, even the software that comes with the camera doesnt use the thumbnail in the file, so its really just wasted space. So I added an option (-dt option) that reads the whole Jpeg image, figures out where the useful part of the Exif header ends, discards the thumbnail, and saves it back to disk. where the thumbnail is, and writes everything (including the rest of the Exif header) back Result: 10k space savings, with all the important information, including the digital camera information in the exif header intact. No loss of image quality, and very fast. So far all software I tried, including the software that comes with the digital cameras, has worked fine, and is still able to parse the Exif header.

DOFC - Depth of Field Calculator 1.6
DOFC is a handy calculator for the depth of field, no matter what camera you?ve got more>>
Its the perfect companion for the Apple PowerBook or iBook you probably carry to store and touch-up your digital images.
DOFC is a tool that will make a nice addition to your shooting set-up, whether you shoot for soft Bokeh in portraits or ultimate sharpness in panoramic images.
Depth of Field, or DoF for short, is the distance from the camera which appears in focus. I use the word appear for good reason: Technically, there is only one single distance which is in focus. But as the human eye is easily fooled, there are adjacent areas in front and behind the subject which appear to be in focus as well.
Sharpness depends on the circumstances, but in general people see things as being sharp if a single dot doesnt expand too much. For 35mm film, the Diameter of Least Confusion, DoLC for short, is 0.029 mm -- if a single dot gets bigger than this on your slide or negative, people will see it as out of focus. Other formats have other DoLCs, and its not brain surgery to calculate them.
But its a major pain.
Everything outside this field will get blurred in the final picture. The blur can be used to make people or subjects stand out but sometimes blur is unwanted, as in landscape images. However, not knowing the DoF makes it difficult to get the right amount of blur. Theres much to read about this, please note the links I provided on the left if youre curious abut the DoLC. If you dont care, as I do, no problem.
There are tons of lists where you can look up the DoF for any given lens/f-stop combination, but with digital still cameras, everything changed. As lenses are specified with the same focal lengths as for 35 mm cameras, none of the former lists will work for your digital cam. The smaller sensor size of digital still cameras makes the focal length of your 35mm lenses longer and the DoLC gets tighter.
The Depth of Field Calculator
Knowing everything about DoF and DoLC doesnt help me in any real world situation. Having used my Nikon 35mm cams for years, I have a good feeling for all of my lenses. But the D70s changed everything.
Even worse, switching between 35mm film, Nikon DX, 1/3" and 2/3" video cameras requires a lot of paper to be carried around to calculate the DoF in any given situation. Carrying my Apple iBook works for me, as all the glass and lighting are a lot to handle on location. Hence I remembered my roots as a programmer and made this little Widget.
The solution
This Widget is a handy calculator for DoF, no matter what camera youve got. It is the perfect companion for the Apple PowerBook or iBook you probably carry to store and touch-up your digital images. DOFC will hopefully make a welcome addition to your shooting setup. If you have any questions regarding this little thing, please contact me.
