N.A.G. (Network Auralization for Gnutella) 1.0 is a distinguished and tractable software art which turns the process of searching for and downloading MP3 files into a chaotic musical collage.

Type in one or more search keywords, and N.A.G. looks for matches on the Gnutella peer-to-peer file sharing network. The software then downloads MP3 files which match the search keyword(s) and remixes these audio files in real time based on the structure of the Gnutella network itself.

N.A.G. (Network Auralization for Gnutella) is a 2003 commission of New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc., (dba Ether-Ore), for its Turbulence web site. It was made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Jack (the Jack Audio Connection Kit) is a low-latency audio server, written originally for the GNU/Linux operating system, and now with Mac OS X support.

It can connect any number of different applications to a single hardware audio device; it also allows applications to send and receive audio to and from each other.

Jack is different from other audio server efforts in that it has been designed from the ground up to be suitable for professional audio work. This means that it focuses on two key areas: synchronous execution of all clients, and low latency operation.

I discovered a brilliant command line program called watch while using my Linux box at work the other day. watch executes a given program periodically, showing output in full screen via ncurses. From the man page:

watch runs command repeatedly, displaying its output (the first screen-full). This allows you to watch the program output change over time.

watch can be extremely handy in viewing changes to commands like ps or ls over time. All in all, a very neat tool. But back home on my PowerBook, I found that watch isnt shipped by default in Mac OS X. A little digging around told me that this program was part of the procps Linux package -- distributed under the GNU General Public License. A little tinkering and tweaking was all it took to get the program running in the Mac OS X shell.

I suspect that others may also want to use this great tool on Mac OS X, and have therefore provided a package.

Its the old Makefile grind, no Package Installer, but the way I see it, if youre the sort of person who finds watch useful, youre bound to know how to compile and install UNIX software. Just download the tgz archive, change to the watch-0.2-macosx directory and type:

make
sudo make install
