Numerous methods of quantatively assessing test bias have been proposed. These include various item metrics, construct methods, content, and predictive procedures. An influential early position regarding the importance of predictive validity indicated that, "a test is considered fair for a particular use if the inference drawn from the test score is made with the smallest feasible random error and if there is no constant error in the inference as a function of membership in a particular group" (Cleary et al., 1975, p. 25).
One of the more popular methods for detecting bias of prediction was published by R. F. Potthoff (1978). Potthoffs model provides both simultaneous and separate tests of regression slopes and intercepts. If a significant F results from the simultaneous test, one may conclude that predictive bias exists and may then conduct separate tests of slopes and intercepts to ascertain whether the bias in prediction is constant (intercepts differ) or varies relative to the distance of scores from the mean (slopes differ). It is generally accepted that no test bias exists if the predictive relationship of two or more groups can be adequately described by a common regression line. An application of the Potthoff procedure can be found in Weiss and Prifitera (1995).

Pound-Shell 0.8.6 Alpha is yet another extremely useful utility designed to act as an automated lab-book for people that conduct experiments in their standard shell environments. The high-level goal of Pound-Shell is to allow users to log data processing experiments (with little/no manual effort or interference) in such a way that they can later go back and recall (or rediscover) and reproduce their steps.
Basically, it's designed to help us determine data's provenance. Further, Pound-Shell allows users to almost automatically re-run old experiments with new data. This type of work includes processing files with R, using gnuplot, interactive perl/python, standard data processing with shell commands (awk, sort, join, etc.), etc. Pound-Shell does not attempt to trace commands if it detects that a program has "captured the screen". Examples include Vim, emacs, etc. In such cases, Pound-Shell waits for the sub-process to end and then resumes recording.
With Pound-Shell, you can send a colleague your data-set(s) and your lbsh lab-book, and they can understand/reproduce/verify your results with Pound-Shell's automated tools. In essence, you simply run "lbsh" and it automatically creates a new shell (the same type [bash | tcsh | etc.] that you already use) in a child process. Figure 1 shows how your session goes through Pound-Shell to the real shell underneath.
When you decide you want to start logging commands for an experiment, you tell Pound-Shell to start logging. Then Pound-Shell simply records your commands (and also traces into the above mentioned tools). It does not record passwords, or anything else that is not output the screen. You can use tab-completes, issue commands that span multiple lines, use shell history, etc. When you are done, you tell Pound-Shell to stop logging. Then you may do whatever and Pound-Shell will quietly wait. You may repeat as needed without having to restart Pound-Shell each time.
Major Features:
- It is able to provide its utility without requiring the user to behave any differently. In a sense, users are free from needing to learn the diligence practiced by other scientists in their labs. In other words, it should make people's lives easy w/o being painful.
- It has processing scripts (file-provenance.pl, exeggutor.pl, etc.) that allow one to specify a file name (such as a graph) and see all of the experiments that were needed to derive its data. The history (or provenance) of files can be seen as an ordered list of experiment IDs or as a Dataset Derivation Graph (or DDG).
- It can be used to re-run experiments with new or old data to update findings or reproduce prior results using a file's provenance.

JunkMatcher can be added to Mail.app as a rule so it can be used hand-in-hand with Mail.apps built-in (statistical) junk filter. Users can decide what actions to take on the matched messages (mark as junk/read/flagged/colored, move them to Junk/Trash mailbox etc.).
A self-contained GUI - JunkMatcher Central is also included so you can conduct "Email forensics": testing and building your regular expression patterns, browsing the log file of the past matchings, etc. You can even report spam to SpamCop.net directly from the log window. Many settings are also available in it so you can customize the entire matching process to your hearts content.
Enhancements:

Due to this addition the SpamBayes property test is now turned on by default.

- Added UI to set ham/spam cutoff values for SpamBayes (in the Test Inspector): Each cutoff value is a positive number between 0.0 and 1.0 (exclusive), and ham cutoff < spam cutoff. Any message with probability > spam cutoff (computed by SpamBayes of course) will be considered spam, and any message with probability < ham cutoff will be considered "definite" ham. The rest are classified as "unsure", but currently "unsure" is synonymous with "ham". :-)
- Added a new preference setting "Filter the test table if Match All finds positive(s)" (default is off). If you turn it on, after you apply a "Match All" in the Analyzer window, the search field will be automatically filled with string "test:matched" to filter the test table so you only see the positive tests. Clearing out the search field will show you the complete list of tests again.
- JunkMatcher now remembers which messages you have used for training, and will skip them if you try to retrain on them.
- Log entries are now color-coded in the "Received Date" column to indicate their training status; they will be automatically updated when you finish training.
- When doing a "Match All" in JunkMatcher.app with SpamBayes property test turned on, the "Last Match All" field in the Test Inspector window now shows the probability computed for the message even if the message is *ham*.
- Added a menu item under View: Inspect SpamBayes (cmd-opt-B). It will open the Test Inspector window on SpamBayes property test directly.
