LED Banner is a free Yahoo! widget that gives you gives you a scrolling LED Banner on your desktop. You can have your own messages, customize the LED and border colors, and resize the length and height of the banner.
You can enter a text in the preferences or specify a text file or any number of RSS URLs to be used as the source of the banner text.
Characters are displayed in the form of a 5x7 matrix of LEDs, which places severe limitations on the characters which can be handled.
This version of LED Banner handles the Basic Latin Character Set, the Latin-1 Supplement and the Katakana Character Set. Characters in the Hiragana Character Set are mapped onto the Katakana Character Set.

Cheap-o-Scope is a small utility that will convert Quicktime movies into Adobe Filmstrip files and also convert Adobe Filmstrip files back into Quicktime movies. Adobe Filmstrip files are recognized by Photoshop and probably other image editing files (its just a sequence of raw RGB image data).
Adobe Premiere will also import them, but if youre using iMovie, youll need to convert. Filmstrip is a good format for doing rotoscoping and animation work if you dont have the money for a separate rotoscoping product.
Using Cheap-o-Scope really couldnt be easier - simply drop a Quicktime movie on it, or select the movie from the "Open..." dialog and a Filmstrip file will be created that can be edited or modified in Photoshop or another image editing program. When you are done editing the file, simply drop the filmstrip (.flm) file on the Cheap-o-Scope icon or select the file from the "Open..." dialog, and it will output it to a Quicktime movie (Note: if Cheap-o-Scope wasnt in the Applications folder when you started OS X, dragging files onto its icon may not work).
Filmstrip files are very large and I wouldnt recommend doing more than a few seconds of footage at a time unless you have a very high powered machine with lots of speed and plenty of RAM. Filmstrip files also do not support a sound track, so you should keep the original movie so that you have the original sound - you can merge the new movie with the old sound in iMovie without any great difficulty.

When we developed the IT Conversations component-based show-assembly system (the first generation of GigaVox Audio Lite, see below), we realized all the components had to be of the same loudness or the results would sound awful. We limped along for many months using the RMS normalization functions in various applications, but the results werent satisfactory and it required tools and skillsets that some of our post-production audio engineers didnt have.

One of our best engineers, Bruce Sharpe, offered to write a standalone software RMS normalization utility, which weve been using as part of our production system GVUploader for nearly a year.

The GVUploaders normalizer acts similar to an intelligent RMS-based compressor/limiter combination, and it therefore affects primarily the short-term (transient) sounds and the long-term overall loudness of the file. It doesnt make the kind of adjustments that a skilled audio engineer can perform in software or at a mixing console, riding the levels up and down to compensate for medium-term variations.

There are some hardware devices such as various AGC (automatic-gain control) components that can do moderate leveling, but since they have to operate in real time (i.e., without look-ahead), they cant do much. And they arent cheap, let alone free.

Even a skilled human can only react to changes unless s/he is lucky enough to be present during a recording session and can use visual cues to anticipate coming variations. Software can do better by performing multiple passes over the audio, generating a loudness map of where the volume changes. (Its not actually that simple, but the metaphor can help.)
