Image Effect Trees (IET) is a new, powerful, image editing program which unlocks the power of Apples Core Image technology. With IET, you create image sources, and connect them to effects.

You will be able to connect the effects and sources to other effects, creating can image effect tree. Your originals are preserved. There is a visual diagram of all your modifications. You can quickly identify where the best quality image resides in your processing chain, allowing you to extract optimal results.

Image Effect Trees (IET) is NOT a general purpose paint/draw program. IET is designed to combine images and text with effects, effects with other effects, and stacks of multiple effects with other stacks of multiple effects, thus creating an effect tree. The original images are always preserved, and since all calculations are in floating point, your image quality is maximized. IET works great with your general purpose paint/draw program.

Most imaging programs utilize the concept of layers. Using layers, you stack effects on top of other effects. The problem with layers is that after stacking several layers together, its hard to keep track of everytthing that was done on a layer, and its hard to see how an effect 10 layers deep might effect the final output.

Typically, the designer cannot keep track of all the effect processing which is performed, and only looks at the last layer. As a result, there are often extra effects which are piled on top of each other, which may degrade image quality. For instace, sharpening an image which was previously blurred, or resizing and image which was previously resized.

Effect trees are different. Instead of merely stacking effects, you make a tree of effects and see the lines of interaction. Without even having to think about it, you will automatically identify and optimize your image proceesing datapath for the best quality.

The image effects come from Apples Core Image library of image units. There are 100 effects including Image Effect Trees may be used for a variety of purposes including :
· geometry manipulations (scaling, rotating, perspective distortions, cropping)
· color adjustments (saturation, brightness, contrast,)
· compositing operations
· Sharpening
· Median, Gaussian, Motion and Zoom blurs
· glass distortion effects
· stylize effects (edges, pixellate, pointillize, bloom, crystallize)
· Gradients (Gaussian, Linear, Radial)

Christmas Tree Creator software is an easy-to-use application for designing Christmas trees with drag-and-drop ornaments and animated lights.

Finished trees can be printed out, sent as a holiday email, or displayed as a personalized screen saver.

Linguistic Tree Constructor (LTC) is a program for analyzing text in terms of syntax trees. That is, it assists in building a rigorous hierarchy of syntactic elements on top of the words in a given piece of text.

Directory View is a file/directory viewer/manipulator. It creates a View (window) which is used to display a selected directory.

Directory Tree is a tool with a plug-in based architecture.

Plugins are required to do anything beyond browsing and basic drag and drop.
This beta release has very limited support. The plugin manager will detect plugins, but thats about it.

It is designed for individuals who know something about the filing system, privileges and how the system works. It is not designed for amateurs.

It does not protect the user from themselves in the same way as the Finder does.
You can inflict a lot of damage to the filing system with this application. (Usual access rights will prevent the system from being hosed).

It allows you to view a directory in six ways :
Info display : information about the directory itself
Text display : display contents in a line-by-line text format
Star display : not yet implemented
Tree display : an icon based, hierarchical display
Column display : similar to Finder column display
Object display : shows ALL* objects in the directory in an icon or list view
Selected display : lists objects which are in one or more of the four selection states

Copy folder tree is an AppleScript that duplicates a folder structure from a selected node into another selected folder.
It will optionally copy or move files of certain types that it finds in the process.

I wrote this for a specifc purpose*, but hopefully the ideas can be used to suit similar needs. I was helped along by scripts posted here by Dan Decker and Robert Metzker, so I thought Id share the results.

*My particular need was to duplicate the folder structure of my iTunes Music Library into a spot where it would get backed up, but not copy the music files themselves. What I wanted to back up were the image files I had found/created, and in the process remove them from the library, since they didnt seem to "belong" there.

From Japan, where the cherry trees are in full bloom, Masaki Hoshino of Hybridworks is publishing icons with the theme of sado, Japanese tea ceremony. These come with wallpapers.

These eight icons are utensils used in and Japanese confections eaten in sado. Cherry trees are now in full bloom in Tokyo, where I live. I designed the icons to bring a sense of season to your desktop. They come with five wallpapers of different sizes.

Wroble is scrabble like game which can be played with real and artificial players.

SBART is a design support tool to create an interesting 2D CG image based on artificial selection, which was originally proposed as Artificial Evolution by Mr. Karl Sims.

Note: This alpha version will expire on June30 2006.

OT2 is a bonsai collection management software for *nix systems and windows that helps you to manage your trees, your pots and your pictures.

It keeps a list of your trees with their characteristics. For each tree, you can apply "events" (work done or to do, diseases, remarks and so on) which will be remembered or add pictures.

Pictures can be resized and moved to a repository while the original may be saved in another place if you wish. At any time, you can get the history of a tree which presents in one page all the characteristics of the tree and list in chronological order all the pictures or events applied to it.

Trees can be managed in batch, with progressive individualization. Very handy if you grow a lot of seedlings.
It can keep a list of your pots if you wish. Free pots can be choosen when rempotting a tree, can have pictures and the history of each pot can be obtained.

All your tree data can be saved to a set of HTML pages which is both a convenience for those who maintain a web site with their trees and an insurance against loss of data, in case this software would not be maintained anymore.

The data is keeped in a standard language called SQL. It may be saved either in a file thanks to SQlite or inside a mySql server, local or distant. Again, the use of industry standards is a warranty against loss of data, which is very important in the case of a bonsai collection which is a long term project.

Here are some key features of "OT2":

· Unlimited number of trees and pots with their detailed characteristics.
· Sort trees according to their name, age, species..., show all of them or only a subset (mature bonsai, potensai, kusamono...)
· For each tree, you can record or schedule any work, remark, treatement, etc..
· Add as many pictures as you want. Pictures can be resized and moved to a repository while the original may be saved in another place.
· See the complete history of a tree, pictures and events displayed together or separated.
· For rempotting events, choose the pot to put the tree in.
· Full fledged installer/desinstaller
· Easy to use interface, tabbed navigation.
· Integration with you favorite image editor : no more lengthy search on your hard drive to find a picture for a virtual.
· Export your tree data to a set of HTML pages.
· Batch management of trees with progressive individualization. Very handy for seedlings!
· Data stored in file or in a mySql server, local or distant (GNU/Linux only feature)
