On July 15, 1597 the frigate Sun Burst was wrecked upon the shoals of Pirate Isle. The only surviving crew member was a furry cheeked sailor named Slash.

The adventure begins when Slash regains consciousness among the debris of his former vessel, determined to uncover the secrets of the island, its treasure, and to discover a means of returning home.

Slash is a sugar glider from the distant land of Australia. Roughly the size of a small squirrel, sugar gliders have a membranous flap of skin connecting their forepaw to their hind feet. Sugar gliders can use this layer of skin in order to glide up to 150 feet through the air, jumping from tree to tree to escape the jaws of their predators.

Our hero is a seaworthy buccaneer who wears his trusty sabre always at his side. He was a notable sailor aboard his ship, being able to leap from mast to mast seemingly without effort. During his future adventures on Pirate Isle, Slash will be able to run, jump, climb, and glide his way to and past obstacles of all kinds.

When strategic maneuvers are not an option, Slash can whip out his sabre to deal death to the most fearsome of foes. Sugar gliders love fresh fruit, so finding such items along the way can rejuvenate or even grant temporary powers to our stalwart marsupial.

Using his unique talents, his uncanny wit, and his deft swordsmanship Slash must travel deeper and deeper into Pirate Isle, avoiding natural predators such as sea gulls, giant crabs, and wild boars.

Cave Story, or Doukutsu Monogatari, is a Japanese freeware PC side-scrolling platformer game developed by StudioPixel. It has been translated into English by Aeon Genesis Translations and will have an official translation script published sometime in the near future.

Cave Story is really one of those games that can be considered a masterpiece of game design. There are so many wonderful and classic gaming elements, that I cannot even begin to describe just one quality well enough to say “It is for this one reason alone that Cave Story is a great game.” There is just so much effort, originality and ingenuity behind this game and it really shows more and more as you play through it.

The developer, Pixel spent five years making this game as fun and as great as it is by adding solid controls, smooth gameplay, a great cast of characters and dialogue, an interesting plot, good music and beautiful old-school 2-D artwork.

And on top of all this added multiple endings, several boss battles, tons of items to collect, all kinds of added secret bonuses and special challenges, various and considerably different methods of playing through the game depending on your actions, competition ranking features and an extremely high replay value. For a freeware game it is fairly lengthy too.

Cave Story is by far the best freeware game I have ever had the honor of playing through and certainly one of the best games I’ve played.

The gameplay plays like a combination of various NES/Famicom games. Some that come to mind are Metroid, Castlevania, Megaman, Blaster Master and Monster Mash. Pixel’s art style and character design and boss battles are very reminiscent of Treasure games, like Gunstar Heroes, which happens to be one of my personal favorite games of all time.

So if you are a fan of any of these titles, then you are in for a real treat. It was a wonderful and addicting experience playing through it and I hope anyone reading this who has not already played this game will give it a shot.
You surely won’t be disappointed. It reminded me of why I enjoy playing videogames.

Antigen is a free Mac game (a free PC game as well) that is a multi-scrolling shooter - aka shmup or shoot em up - involving viruses and bacteria.

When playing Antigen, viruses, toxins and bacteria are attempting to destroy you and your ship. Your goal is to annihilate these substances. Your survival will help you conquer the evil forces trying to harm you and cause your demise.

With the help of a radar minimap at the bottom of the screen, you will have an overview of the baddies approaching your ship. This is direly necessary as the radar view will aid in keeping you and your ship healthy.

Additionally, you have a running count located at the bottom left of your screen that will indicate three things: 1) which wave youre playing; 2) how many enemies are left; and, 3) how many lives you have left.

Collect bonuses being thrown at you. Proceed with caution. The longer you survive, the longer youll play. That is not an easy task, so good luck. There is an unlimited number of waves (levels) in this game.
