HFS stores meta data, e.g. Finder and Resource information on HFS within one file, but standard UNIX applications can only see the data part, the additional information (e.g. resource file, creation and backup date, file comments, type & creator, hidden flags, etc.) gets lost using standard UNIX-based tools, such as "cp", "cpio", "tar", "dump", "pax", "cat", "dd", etc.
This means that the copies will be incomplete and many files will just refuse to work. For example, booting will not work, previews from EPSF files are missing, applications will not detect their own files anymore, etc.

On most Unix-based operating systems, filesystems to be mounted at system startup are listed in the /etc/fstab file. The format of this file is described in the fstab(5) man page.

While Mac OS X supports /etc/fstab, the preferred method on Mac OS X for specifying filesystems to be mounted at startup is NefInfo. Whilst Mac OS X will automatically mount all filesystems listed in NetInfo and UFS and HFS filesystems listed in /etc/fstab at startup, it will ignore the lines in /etc/fstab referring to NFS filesystems, not mounting them, despite the fact that the mount_nfs(8) man page states otherwise.

MountNFS is a little startup item which restores the missing functionality. Once this item is installed, NFS filesystems listed in /etc/fstab will be automatically mounted at system startup.

Although CodeWarrior has the required support for creating bundles, MakeBundle improves upon the process. So what does MakeBundle do? It converts a single-file application to a bundled application with a simple drag & drop. Not only does this work for applications (.app), but it also works for CFM shared libraries (.cfm) and CFPlugins (.plugin).

The complete list of tasks that MakeBundle performs are as follows:

Creates the folder hierarchy for a bundle.
Extracts the plst resource into an Info.plist file.
Extracts the executable from the datafork to the correct location in the bundle.
Creates a PkgInfo file.
Extracts resources into localizable or non-localizable .rsrc files, or alternatively ignores resources that are not useful for bundles.
Flattens resources into the datafork of their respective files. Bundles are completely flat and safe for non HFS file systems.Extracts icns icons into individual .icns files.
Optionally installs a custom icon onto the bundle folder for non-applications.
Uses the plist to recognize the language of the application. This makes creating localized bundles extremely easy.

Here at Aladdin Systems, weve been using MakeBundle to produce bundled versions of our applications in a reliable, consistent manner. It has also made it easier to localize our software for MacOS X. Because this utility has been useful to us, were hoping it may be useful to the developer community. Best of all, its entirely free to use.
