XTar 1.0

XTar 1.0 brings you a very useful back up and recovery tool which stores Finder and Resource information on HFS within one file. Standard Unix applications can only see the data part. HFS-compatible applications can deal with the additional resource and finder information but they do not understand UNIX special files. This means that the copies will be incomplete and many files will just refuse to work.

Xtar solves this problem by saving each data and resource forks as two files in the standard TAR container format to preserve all information. During a restore with Xtar on an HFS volume, the resource and finder information will be restored into a valid HFS files containing all information. This prevents data loss and enables you to create a bootable backup disc of Mac OS X. It is also ideal for backing up and restoring files and folders. Xtar is based on GNU tar (version 1.13.25).
