The Repgen application generates the scripts required to setup, remove and monitor an Oracle database Advanced Replication installation. The implementation of primary key, replication triggers and multiple conflict resolution methods is included. As with the Installgen program, an external Perl module along with the Perl source code allows site-specific customization of each generated file.
Setting up and maintaining an Oracle Advanced Replication configuration is a non-trivial task. Significant planning is required prior to actually designing a Replication configuration. Further work may be required to "fix up" a schema which was never originally designed to be replicated. Primary key columns and conflict resolution columns may need to be added to existing tables.
The Repgen application is the only tool on the market today which covers all aspects of planning, evaluating server configurations, setting up, monitoring and documenting an Oracle Advanced Replication installation.
Repgen builds scripts which provides a standardized, well-documented process for setting up multi-master replication which covers all pre-setup and post-setup tasks. Two PL/SQL procedures are produced for the purposes of monitoring the replication process. These procedures run at a DBA specified interval at either the Master Definition or another site, and produce an email summary report of any problems which have been found.
Extensive work has been to implement a robust conflict resolution configuration into each replication setup. Oracle recommends that a minimum of 2 conflict resolution methods be implemented for a multi-master replication installation. Actual experience with replicated production servers has shown a practical need for at least 3 conflict resolution methods. Repgen is the only tool that produces the scripts required for the automatic configuration of these conflict resolution methods.
Repgen generates 27 output files for a 2 server implementation. An Advanced Replication setup involving more than 2 master sites will result in an additional 6 files being generated for each additional master site. All of these files are produced by Repgen within a few seconds at the press of a button, instead of the hours or even days of work typically required to write these scripts.
Complete Perl source code is provided for the Perl programs which generate each of the output files [Enterprise Edition feature]. Customers who license the software may also customize the file generation process by adding code to the external repgen_custom.pm file. Access to the well-documented Perl source code makes it possible to change the way the output files are generated and customers may even create code to produce entirely new output files to meet site-specific needs.
