Shion 2.0

Shion 2.0 is an excellent tool which helps you manage your home easily. Shion (and the included userspace driver) implements portions of the INSTEON command set and allows users to build a list of devices that can be controlled remotely. This application (and driver) is currently under development and will be extended and completed as time permits. The long-term goal for Shion is to package it as a reusable framework for other MacOS X developers. It is capable of monitoring and controlling lamps, appliances, and other devices using your Apple Mac computer. Save your favorite environmental settings as snapshots and Shion will restore these environments on events such as sunrise & sunset, remote control presses, and prescheduled times.

Shion includes a variety of advanced features that allow you to take control of the devices in your house. When used with the built-in calendar, Shion can make your home appear occupied when you are away. When configured to use the event system, Shion can turn on the porch light at sunset and turn it off when the sun rises the next day. You can use Shion to save your favorite light configurations and recall them with a push of a button. These options and more are described below.

In short, Shion frees you from the physical limitations of managing your local environment. No longer do you need to go to the basement to see if the light has been left on. You no longer need to be present in your house to have it appear occupied. By taking advantage of the latest advances in technologies, Shion allows you to take control of your environment in the times and places of your choosing.

5. Snapshots: Snapshots are a feature of Shion that allow you to save and recall your favorite environmental configurations at a later time. Snapshots are useful for shutting down extraneous lights when you got to bed, setting up the ideal room for watching movies, and dynamically adapting your environment throughout a workday.
6. Events: Shion's event system enables it to react to the external environment without your intervention. Shion supports an ever-growing list of events, including sunrise & sunset, scheduled times, and X10 commands. Events are bound to snapshots or AppleScripts, allowing Shion to manipulate the environment or take other actions.
7. Applescript: Shion features a modest AppleScript interface that allows the application to be controlled using other programs and scripts.
