Panoply 2.8.3 description

Panoply 2.8.3 is well-known as a powerful as well as reliable Java application that is created to help you plot geo-gridded arrays from netCDF, HDF and GRIB datasets.

To be plotted by Panoply, dataset variables must be tagged with metadata information using a convention such as CF.

Major Features:

  1. Slice and plot specific latitude-longitude, latitude-vertical, or time-latitude arrays from larger multidimensional variables.
  2. Combine two arrays in one plot by differencing, summing or averaging.
  3. Plot lon-lat data on a global or regional map (using any of over 75 map projections) or make a zonal average lineplot.
  4. Overlay continent outlines or masks on lon-lat plots.
  5. Use any ACT, CPT, GGR, or PAL color table for scale colorbar.
  6. Save plots to disk GIF, JPEG, PNG or TIFF bitmap images or as PDF or PostScript graphics files.
  7. Export lon-lat map plots in KMZ format.

Enhancements:

  • Added Clear Menu item to Recent Files menu.
  • (Mac) Bugfix: Appearance of toolbar at top of Datasets Browser window when viewed on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
  • Bugfix: Show Contours & Vectors menu item did not work.
  • Eliminated floating progress windoid. Replaced it with status bar at bottom of application windows.
  • If started from the command line, added option to allow for multiple instances of Panoply to run at one time. Use "-multi" argument.
  • Added ability to save plot images in uncompressed TIFF format.
  • Added ability to save plot images in uncompressed JPEG format.
  • Bugfix: Possible null pointer condition could break examination of a lon-lat variable using alternative grid.
  • Bugfix: Annoying Datasets Browser repaint flicker on some platforms.
  • Library: Updated netCDF-Java to version 4.0.49.
  • Library: (Mac) Upgrade Quaqua FC to version 6.0.1.
  • Library: Updated GISS mapping to version 1.3.1.

Requirements: Panoply requires a computer with a Java 5 runtime environment, or better, installed. If you are using OS X 10.5 (Leopard), or if you are using OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and have been running System Update, then you should have Java 5 on your Mac.
